How You Can Help

Volunteering

DownsSteam Tourist Railway and Museum is a fantastic volunteer organisation that welcomes everyone, regardless of their background or previous experience. Our diverse members come from all walks of life and possess a wide range of skills. You don’t need specialist railway knowledge; just a willingness to help out.

At DownsSteam, we strive to create a positive and harmonious workplace for our prospective volunteers. Our precinct has a ‘can-do’ attitude and a willingness to make things happen. Our existing volunteers are friendly, inclusive, and incredibly fun to be around. These energetic and enthusiastic individuals have found meaning, purpose, and fulfilment in their roles, whether working individually or as part of a team.

You can start volunteering immediately without any prerequisites. We have many ‘entry-level’ jobs and tasks that need to be done, and you’ll make great friends along the way. Our management and team leaders do their utmost to connect volunteer activities with their individual passions and drives, ensuring a sense of purpose and belonging within the organisation. We also offer valuable in-house training to volunteers interested in furthering their progress, which could also assist with their study or work opportunities.

Professional and trade volunteers are encouraged to join our innovative technical volunteer teams, as their valuable skills are crucial to our project’s progress.

The DownsSteam management team genuinely appreciates the time and selfless efforts of our volunteers. Volunteering is an integral part of DownsSteam’s success.

If you’re handy with tools, a keen gardener, interested in marketing and publicity, or would love to join our very active catering section, you’d be more than welcome. If you’re looking for an opportunity to make new friends and be part of an organisation that genuinely benefits the region, why not come and see us? All volunteers must be current financial members to be covered for insurance.

For more information, contact a volunteer member at the DownsSteam precinct by phone or, better yet, come and meet our team for a friendly guided tour of our facilities.
